Philippines Proud of Its World U-20 Girls Chess Representatives

The Philippines sent two female players to the World U-20 Girls Chess Championship.  The US, the richest country in the world, did not even send one!

MANILA, Philippines -- Filipino Woman National Master (WNM) Janelle Mae Frayna finished in a tie for 22nd to 33rd places in the World Junior Chess Championships in Chennai, India.

Frayna's last match against Woman International Master (WIM) Carla Heredia Serrano of Ecuador ended in a draw.

The 14-year-old Frayna, one of only two Filipinos in the 13-round tournament, finished her campaign with 7 points on 6 wins, 2 draws and 5 loses.

After the tie break was applied, Faryna settled for overall 22nd.

Frayna, seeded 58th in the 69-player field, finished 4 points behind eventual champion Woman Grandmaster (WGM) Cori T Deysi of Peru.

In the Open section, Filipino FIDE Master (FM) Mari Joseph Turqueza settled a truce with Sharma Hemant of India to end up in 41st place with 7 points.

Turqueza finished overall 48th place in the 126-player field.

The annual tournament is organized by the All India Chess Federation and sanctioned by the World Chess Federation (FIDE). -- By Marlon Bernardino
